Learn directly with Master Valentín López in his Taller Escuela in San Juan de Oriente, Nicaragua. This private residency introduces participants to Indigenous pre-Columbian pottery practice through hands-on studio instruction, material knowledge, ecological observation, and cultural immersion.
This residency is designed for potters, ceramic artists, students, collectors, and culturally curious travelers who want to learn from a master practitioner in the place where this knowledge is held, practiced, and passed on.
Through Humanculture, Valentín López and the Taller Escuela de Cerámica Valentín López were recently selected for the Global Awards for World Heritage Education Innovative Cases, a UNESCO World Heritage education initiative, for their work preserving and transmitting Indigenous pre-Columbian Chorotega ceramic knowledge.
The experience is private, flexible, and arranged by request. It is not a fixed-date group tour.
This residency is suitable for potters, ceramic artists, beginners who want serious hands-on learning, art and design students, teachers, collectors, individuals, couples, private groups, women traveling solo, and LGBTQ+ travelers.
No advanced pottery background is required. Participants should come with respect, curiosity, and willingness to learn from a living Indigenous ceramic tradition.
STUDIO INSTRUCTION
01 / MASTER INSTRUCTION
The foundation of the residency is direct instruction with Master Ceramicist Valentín López at the Taller Escuela de Cerámica Valentín López in San Juan de Oriente.
02 / PRACTICAL LEARNING
Participants learn through demonstration, observation, and hands-on practice inside an active Indigenous pre-Columbian ceramic workshop and school.
03 / Indigenous Knowledge
The residency is taught within a framework of Indigenous knowledge sovereignty respecting the Chorotega authority over what is shared, taught, and protected.
FULL IMMERSION RESIDENCY

For participants seeking a deeper experience, this option extends into ecological connection, material sourcing, and cultural experiences throughout Nicaragua.
05 / INCLUSIVE PACKAGE
Full Immersion includes: Casita accommodation on the Lopez property, Most meals, Airport transfers from Managua International Airport, Ground Transportation.
06 / Beyond Ceramica
Visits places within the geography, ecology, mineral sourcing, markets, foods, vessels, and cultural life that are central to the full cycle Chorotega pottery practice.

How do I book?

Do I need pottery experience?
No. The residency welcomes complete beginners as well as practicing ceramicists. What’s required is respect, curiosity, and willingness to learn.
What language is instruction in?
Instruction is led by Valentín López in Spanish, with translation support available.
How do I get to San Juan de Oriente?
Fly into Managua International Airport (MGA). With the Full Immersion Residency, airport pickup from Managua and return transfer are included, along with ground transportation throughout the residency. Studio Residency participants are responsible for their own arrival arrangements, ground transportation, and accommodation.
What is the deposit and cancellation policy?
A 50% deposit is required to reserve your dates, with the remaining balance due 30 days before arrival. Payments are processed through Humanculture, which administers the residency in partnership with Valentín López and the Taller Escuela. Deposits are non-refundable once dates are reserved. Final payments are non-refundable once paid. Because this is a highly personalized residency with a single master practitioner, dates are limited and reserved on a first-come basis.
Can I customize the itinerary?
Yes. Dates, length, and field-learning visits for the Full Immersion Residency are arranged based on participant interest, availability, and travel pace.
